Who doesn’t stop to stare at the sight of a new baby? A little girl’s smile? Or even a young boy’s single tear, coursing down his cheek?
A coalition of local agencies is inviting the public to celebrate the beauty of all children with an amateur photo contest. The theme of the contest is “Our Children. Our Future.” Deadline for contest entries is April 30 and the photos will be displayed in a public location during the month of May.
The Family Focus Coalition is all about children and families. They are sponsoring the event to call attention to two events in April and May -- April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month and May is National Foster Care Month. Both months are about the future of children.
Entries may be submitted in a variety of formats, at the photographer’s discretion. From a framed and matted 8X10 color glossy to a simple black and white 1973 snapshot of Grandma Gertrude with her youngest twin grandsons, all are welcome. It is asked the photos be mounted in some manner, with a mat, frame, card stock or simple colored paper, whichever is best to suit the photo. The quality of the photo, not the display is the criterion for judging.
Prizes will be awarded in each of four categories – preschool, elementary school, junior or senior high school and adult, based on the age of the photographer. In addition, professionals and Family Focus Coalition members are invited to submit their photos for display; however, they will not be eligible for prizes. Lastly, all photographers may request their photo be displayed, but not judged.
Photographers are asked to limit their displays to three entries. Professional photographers will judge the photos in early May and the display will be open to the public shortly thereafter at a location to be announced later this month.
Submissions may be delivered to the YMCA or Family Rescue Services and should include the artist’s name, age/category and contact information on a separate sheet of paper or index card. The rules are simple and few, but any questions may be addressed to Stacy Mack at the YMCA (762-2201), Heather Edwards at Family Rescue Services (762-2215), Karen Boysen with Health and Human Services (763-2923) or Mary Wernke with the Family Focus Coalition (487-6397).
